How to give azan in new born baby (1-3 Steps)

Let’s see the right process to give azan to newborn babies.

Step 1: Facing toward the Qiblah

The Qiblah is one of the vital conditions for performing Islamic rituals. The Holy Mosque of Kaaba in Makkah is called the Qiblah.

It is important to face the Qiblah while performing any Islamic rituals.

So, while you are giving azan to a newborn child, it is Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad to change his head direction toward Qibla in order to perform this ritual. To do it:

  • Lay the child down on its bed or in a clean place.
  • Use your hand and politely hold his neck.
  • Don’t use too much force on the neck, or it could hurt it.
  • Start moving his neck to the Qiblahs’ direction.
  • Don’t rush while turning his neck.
  • Make sure when he faces the Qiblah, he gets proper comfort.

Step 2: Giving Azan to the right ear

  • First, you have to lay the child down in front of a muezzin who can recite azan and Iqama.
  • If a muezzin can’t be found, any man who can recite azan and Iqama can whisper them into the ear of the newborn child.
  • If there is no man in the house, it is said that women can recite these holy surahs to the child’s ear.
  • Keep in mind that it is a must to narrate twice the Adhan into the right ear of the newborn child.

The Adhan is written below-

 {ʾAllāhu ʾakbar}

God is Greater (4x)

{ʾašhadu ʾan lā ʾilāha ʾillā -llāhu}

I bear witness that there is no deity but God (2x)

{ʾašhadu ʾanna Muḥammadan rasūlu -llāhi}

I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God (2x)

{ḥayya ʿalā ṣ-ṣalāhti}

Hasten to the prayer (Salah) (2x)

{ḥayya ʿalā l-falāḥi}

Hasten to the salvation (2x)

{ʾAllāhu ʾakbaru}

God is greater (2x)

{lā ʾilāha ʾillā -llāhu}

There is no deity but God (1x)

Step 3: Giving it Iqamah to the left ear

While the recital process of azan is over, it is necessary to recite the Iqama in the newborn child’s ear.

To do it,

  • Use your hand to turn the neck in a slightly opposite direction, facing toward the reciter.
  • The reciter then has to gently read the Iqamah to the child’s ear.
  • While reciting the Iqama and Adhan, it is recommended to touch his ear a little bit.
  • The reciter must not apply a lot of pressure while touching the ear.
  • Iqama is recited almost the same as Adan. After reading the say .

Why is it important to give azan to newborn babies?

  • In Islam, it is believed that all newborn children are followers of Islam, and the giving of the azan into a child’s ear signifies him as Muslim.
  • The adhan provides for the purification of the souls of the children.
  • The whispering Adhan into the child’s ear saves it from any evil act of the Devil or Satan.
  • The azan is a zikr of Allah, and according to Islam, Allah becomes pleased with Muslims if they zikr.
  • The purpose of azan is to emphasize that all living things must die at some point, so the child should prepare for the Araf by pleasing Allah during his lifetime.
  • The whispering of azan in a newborn child’s ears is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, so it will provide a huge amount of Neki, who performs this act according to Islam.
  • The baby should be welcomed into this world with a good word, and the azan is perfectly appropriate for this purpose.

Who can give azan to a newborn?

Giving azan to a newborn child is a Sunnah established by Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S). The Prophet first applied this holy ritual to his grandson, Hazrat Hasan (R). It is written in Hadiah that-

Translation: Abu Rafi’ saw Nabi Sallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam perform Azan in the ear of Hasan Radiyallahu Anhu when Fatimah gave birth to him (Abu Dawud V.5 Pg.518 Darul Yusr)

So it is vital to perform this ritual as the  Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S) implied. When giving Adhan and Iqama to a newborn child, it is recommended that these holy surahs should be read by the child’s father.

The father needs to accomplish all the steps of the ritual according to Hades perfectly. As a result, the newborn child is welcomed into the world with good words that are said by Allah and Prophet Muhammad (S).

But in case if the father of the children has died or he is not available in the house, a close male relative of the newborn child can recite this holy dua. If there are still no men in the house, any Islamic scholar or Muajjin or Iman of a mosque can recite the Adhan and Iqama.

And still, if there is a problem finding a scholar to recite them to the ear of a child, there is no problem. The mother of the son is eligible to perform this holy ritual by completing all the steps perfectly.

Can a female give azan to newborn?

In normal circumstances, a woman can’t give Adhan to a newborn child. The Prophet Muhammad (S) only permitted men to perform this holy ritual. The Prophet Muhammad (S) had given azan to his grandson, Hazrat Hasan (R). So it is permitted for the man to execute this holy ritual so that the child can be welcomed to the world by hearing Surahs.

However, the permission could be changed in different circumstances. If there are no men in the house, the women can fulfill this holy ritual. In that situation, the best solution is that the mother of the child should narrate the azan and Iqama to the newborn child’s ear for performing this holy ritual.

It states in Fatawa Mahmoodiyah;

” In the maternity ward, at the time of giving birth if there is no male available, then the woman can perform this Azan & Iqamah. If there is nobody present the newborn baby’s mother can say it if she is not in the state of Nifaas (post-natal bleeding)”
