Is Carpet Cleaner Safe for Babies?

Is carpet cleaner safe for babies and if not then what to do?

Well, a carpet cleaner is safe for babies if it doesn’t contain any chemical compounds that are harmful to human bodies.

Yes, it is safe if it doesn’t contain dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde, nepheline, phenol, sodium hydroxide, etc.

Many companies use different types of aldehyde or carboxylic acids in their products to provide perfect cleaning for carpets, but they are extremely dangerous for newborn babies.

Choose a carpet cleaner only from a certified company as they use green elements, which are eco-friendly and don’t have any side effects. Home-made carpet cleaners are also safe for babies.

They are made with safe ingredients like baking soda or vinegar and have an exact pH level between 6 and 8, which doesn’t affect human bodies.

Is carpet cleaner safe for babies?

Carpet cleaning is essential for babies because, if you don’t clean carpets regularly, mold or moss can start growing in them. They may possess viruses and bacteria that can be hazardous to babies.

Cleaning with a carpet cleaner is the fastest and easiest way.

However, different companies use different chemical products so that their cleaners can clean carpets properly.

As I said, a good carpet cleaner should have a pH of between 6 and 8. Those chemicals with a pH level between this level can be used in newborn babies’ rooms. Homemade carpet cleaners are also safe for babies because of the safety elements used to make them.

When choosing a carpet cleaner for your baby’s room, ignore chemical-contained carpet cleaners. Always select a company certified by the FDA because they follow the appropriate certificates like using green chemicals or having a perfect pH.

Also, check the pH of the carpet cleaner. If it has a pH of between 6 and 8, you may use it because it is not too acidic or too alkalic. If you don’t want to use ready-made products, try to make a carpet cleaner for your house.

Vinegar-based or baking soda-based carpet cleaners are easy to make and do not contain any harmful chemicals. According to consumerreports most consumers have chosen Bissell as their best carpet cleaner.

Oxi Fresh is also famous because they use Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which are very eco-friendly. These compounds are safe hydrocarbons with an accurate pH of 6.7–7.7, so they don’t cause any damage to your baby.

Which carpet cleaner is not safe for babies?

Carpet cleaners with raw chemical compounds are dangerous for babies. Pregnant mother should avoid toxic house-hold products like hydrocarbons, such as formaldehyde, naphthalene, phenol, etc.

They also contain non-hydrocarbon elements like sodium hydroxide, tetrachloroethylene, butoxy ethanol, and hydrofluoric acid. These compounds are very dangerous for babies. By touching sodium hydroxide, baby skin can start burning.

If babies somehow swallow carpet parts with cleaner ( with sodium hydroxide), they will start vomiting and feel stomach and chest pain. A carpet cleaner with naphthalene can cause organ damage

It can even damage their neurologic system. Perchloroethylene is also a popular substance for carpet cleaners that can cause dizziness and vital fatigue when babies swallow it.

Butoxy Ethanol is a gas element in carpet cleaners. It has a beautiful smell.

But the problem is that it can enter your baby’s body by touching its skin or absorbing it while breathing. It can cause kidney and liver failure. Your baby’s eye can get damaged because of it.

When a baby swallows carpet cleaner with hydrofluoric acid, it will start vomiting and coughing. In the worst-case scenario, his lung will stop working, and he could die.

How to clean carpets for the safety of your babies?

Now let’s see some ways to clean the carpet keeping the baby’s safety in mind.

Before cleaning your carpet, prevent dirt from entering your baby’s room. To do it,

  • Stop entering your baby’s room while wearing shoes.
  • Make sure to place a doormat outside of the baby’s room. It will prevent dirt or mud from getting inside your baby’s room.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner on the carpets regularly to remove all the dust from them.

Use your homemade non-toxic cleaner instead of regular carpet cleaner

It is better not to use chemical cleaners on your baby’s room carpet. Here is why you should come to know 10 ways to keep your baby safe from toxic cleaning products.

That’s why try to use homemade non-toxic cleaners on the baby room’s carpet. Every toxic element comes with a nontoxic chemical alternative. Though they don’t work as effectively as chemical compounds, they are much safer.

The process of cleaning your carpets with non-toxic homemade cleaners is described below.

Using vinegar:

  • Take a bowl.
  • Put 2 tablespoons of salt in it.
  • Now pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar into that bowl.
  • Mix them perfectly.
  • Take a soft cotton cloth and dip it in that bowl.
  • Use that wet cloth to rub the carpet stains perfectly.
  • When every area of the carpet is rubbed, keep that carpet in an open place to dry.
  • After that, use a vacuum cleaner to clean the carpet.

Using baking soda:

  • Put 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl.
  • Pour 2 cups of water into the bowl and mix them perfectly.
  • You can also use cornstarch instead of baking soda.
  • Now use a soft cotton cloth and dip it in the mixture.
  • Use that cloth to rub all the greasy spots on the carpet.
  • After rubbing, put the carpet in an open place for 6 hours so that it can dry perfectly.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the carpet afterward.

Dry the carpet as fast as possible after cleaning it

Drying the carpet is equally as important as cleaning it. When a carpet is not dried properly, mildew and mold grow on it. They can be harmful to babies. While cleaning your carpet, always make sure to open all the windows.

The airflow from outside will help it dry faster. Use a fan if you do not get sufficient air circulation. Keep the carpet in a place where it gets enough heat.

If you place it directly in the sun, the color of the carpet will deteriorate, so don’t place it under direct sunlight. Try not to clean the carpet on a rainy day or a day full of humidity. Because of less airflow, the carpet will need more time to dry.
